Hydroelectric power stations

In recent years a growing interest in small hydroelectric power stations could be observed. This is related to changes in the Polish energy market and the EU policy to promote renewable energy sources. Until now, in this area the potential in Poland is so far underexploited. Therefore investors are increasingly interested in this relatively cheap way of energy production – because of a cost-free energy source, minimal operating costs of only 0.5 percent per year of the total investment expenditure, high energy efficiency of 90 to 95 percent.

Advantages of small hydroelectric power stations are:


  • small installation size,
  • high automation level,
  • uncomplicated construction,
  • high reliability rate and long durability ,
  • short period of investment realisation (1-2 years).



The volume of the energy production of small hydroelectric power stations can range from 50 kW to 15 MW, depending on the technology used and the environmental situation of the surrounding area.

In the next years, it is planned to build in Poland about 900 dam projects. About half of them could be suitable for small hydroelectric power stations.
